David Boesch resigns as San Mateo County manager

David Boesch, the current county manager and former Menlo Park city manager, will resign the county post Dec. 31, the county announced today.

The announcement followed a closed session of the Board of Supervisors. According to the county statement, "Boesch said it was clear that he and the Board had different philosophies and that in the best interest of the organization he tendered his resignation."

Mr. Boesch's last day in the office will be Nov. 15. Between then and Dec. 31, he will help in the transition to an interim county manager not yet chosen.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this organization during especially challenging times," Mr. Boesch said in the statement. "I will forever treasure this experience and the many fond memories and friendships."

Mr. Boesch managed Menlo Park between July 2000 and February 2007, when he was named assistant county manager. He took the top job in the county in late 2008, upon the retirement of John Maltbie, who served as county manager for 19 years. It was also the time of the financial crisis.

"I have a real passion for working on problems that on the surface seem intractable," he said in the statement. "What I have learned in my career in public service is that almost any problem is solvable if you bring together the people involved and demonstrate a genuine commitment to working in partnership toward a solution."

Mr. Boesch has a master's degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and previous served as community development director in Nashua, New Hampshire, and in Sunnyvale.

Board President Carole Groom, noting Mr. Boesch's many contributions, said the board will look nationwide for a new manager.

Wow the Board of Supervisors consist of 5 members 2 of which were appointed not elected by the voters. That would be Rose Jacobs Gibson and Carole Groom.

What a shame to lose County manager David Boesch.

Good luck Mr. Boesch

It is to be hoped they get someone competent. It needs to be someone from outside the County. There is a need for a lot of shake up in the County, especially in Public Works

"it was clear that he and the Board had different philosophies"

He worked to balance the budget, the board didn't.

He worked on cuts, the board gave the Sheriff's a 3% raise.

David Boesch was fired.
"I'm not yet persuaded that we need to build a new jail facility either to replace the women's facility or address some of the crowded conditions in Maguire to the order magnitude the Sheriff is recommending," Boesch wrote in an email to The Daily News.
This is part of the reason.

He was one of the best things going for the Taxpayers of San Mateo County.

note: David was not a member of Service League of San Mateo County.

Wake up San Mateo County

The majority of the board backed an unfinished jail even without state construction funds while Boesch has long questioned just how the county will pay for the building and annual operations.

majority= Carol, Don, Adrienne, Rose

Very sad that the very person being financially responsible is the one being removed. When will accountability return to public office? Wake up people! Mr. Boesch should stay and the rest should go!

" When will accountability return to public office?"

When a lot of citizen get off their butts and start going to meetings, complaining to their elected officials and vote for individuals who are committed to fiscal responsibility.

San Mateo County manager John Maltbie gave the BOS his letter of resignation and than changed his mind and stayed.

We the people should demand to know if ALL Supervisors wanted David Boesch fired.

Rose Gibson Jacobs is gone in 7 months.

Nobody is talking, closed door secession. No previous complaints......This STINKS

[Portion deleted.] Mr. Boesch is no longer the county manager. He was unable to work effectively with his various constituents. Residents of this county don't want essential services cut to the bone because of short-term financial problems. We have a county that makes public safety a top priority.

Munks seems to so so much in this county without repercussion. It's weird, like he wears an invisibility cloak or something. Or maybe it's just that so many residents wear blinders...

It has to do with the organized vote. They keep him elected, they never said boo about Operation DollHouse 4/21/2007, Also the Service League of San Mateo County did the same.
