Overeat, Gorge, Feast, Attack, Pig Out, Fill Up, Binge

I've been having conversations on and off line about last week's blog, Eat Anything You Want Except For Two Days A Week,* and realize it can be approached in one of two ways:

Fast vs. Fill

The fasting approach means 1-2 days a week your eating style is one of not. With this perspective, eating mostly fruits and veggies means not eating much at all, because without all the other "crap," what else is there to eat besides raw carrot and celery sticks? Listen, fasting sucks. I should know, I've tried everything: Master Cleanse, Atkins, juice fasting, South Beach, Peanut Butter Fast. I've cut it all out in the name of God of Health and Goddess of Skinny.

But no longer – it doesn't work for me. Now, I FILL. As a dedicated Food Partier, I have finally accepted my inner hedonist.

I hereby admit to:
Overeating Onions
Pigging out on Pumpkin
Filling on Fennel
Gorging Courgettes
Feasting Figs
Attacking Aubergine
Binging on Broccoli

Actually, we should eat too many veggies everyday, but we are a society surrounded by quick-to-get protein and carbs, so that's what most of us eat, most of the time.

But you can rise above the fray.

EAYWEF2DAW* means you commit to going the extra mile and insure a variety of veggies. It's kind of like Just Do It, but with vegetables and fruits. Don't not eat. Gorge with gusto.

How 'bout it? Join me in a vegetable g' orgy? Plates await you... filled with the raw, the cooked, and the pickled. Different styles, seasoned with sweet, salty, spicy, sour, bitter, & savory umami. Smell it. Taste it. Come on, let me feed you.

Once you get the hang of that, we'll move to Lesson #2:

The Law of Signatures
what a vegetable looks like is what it is good for.

Yes, yup, zucchini, cauliflower too....Secrets revealed only to those who do the homework. Start thinking about it now.

Here's the problem...binge eating broccoli is still binge eating, which is an unhealthy eating style. Trust me, I do it and it doesn't feel good.

@RW:

I\\\'m pretty sure Laura added a generous dose of hyperbole in her blog entry.

That said, I too am particularly curious to hear about how you prepare your broccoli and how much of it you eat per week, as well as the quantities of other vegetables you consume during the same period.

I saute broccoli with garlic and olive oil. I'm not sure why the preparation matters. Binge eating is binge eating.

From Wikipedia "Binge eating is a pattern of disordered eating which consists of episodes of uncontrollable eating. It is sometimes a symptom of binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating disorder. During such binges, a person rapidly consumes an excessive amount of food. Most people who have eating binges try to hide this behavior from others, and often feel ashamed about being overweight or depressed about their overeating."

I don't watch Oprah regularly, but happened to see an episode where she was talking about binge eating a head of lettuce. It's not the food that's the problem, it's the compulsion of bingeing. I guess I have some concerns about the Original Post adding binge eating to what looked like a list of "how we should eat"

RW, I asked preparation because using oil and seasonings, (as compared to just steaming for instance), is much more satisfying. You are speaking about consuming food for reasons other than hunger I see. I come from an eating disorder background - so I understand that perspective, and it ain't pretty! A subject for another blog. I've got interesting stories here and I bet you do too. For this blog - there was a "generous dose of hyperbole." Binge was used only because it begins with a "B." Thanks for connecting.

The alliteration pattern indicated hyperbole, so it appears I was quite right about that.

Anyhow, let us commenters not dampen Laura's enthusiasm. It's a blog, not a recipe from Nathan Myhrvold.

I understand that while this blog posting was an attempt at "healthy" light-hearted fun, it did touch on a very serious subject, binge eating. As a commentator pointed out, it is a food disorder. It is also something that the processed food and sweets industry counts on nurturing and developing in their target market population to ensure that the demand for their so-called food keeps rolling in. Since blogger Laura's "About this blog" reveals that she had (has?)an eating disorder, I would think she might want to be more sensitive to others who are suffering at the moment. Perhaps she has some insight to share about how she dealt with her disorder.

Thank you everyone for writing and the feedback. Styles do differ. From me, one can expect a more playful, slang style. I am surprised no one has called me on the use of "ain't" yet! Re eating disorders I've said over the years, "If I haven't accomplished anything else in life, I healed myself from an eating disorder." The subject for another blog.
